Topic 4 Space in dance

Space and the use of space is a subject that has been dealt with in dance. According to Rudolf Laban the personal space of a dancer is the area directly around the body, called the kinesphere.

This is defined as the imaginary sphere around him whose centres always coincide and whose maximum extent is that reached by the body segments. This area becomes smaller or larger as the dancer moves and changes position.

Other types of spaces used in dance are active space and performance space. Active space is an abstract Topic that occurs when the space itself takes on significant meaning, i.e. it makes the performance what it is because of the space in which it takes place. Performance space simply refers to the area where the dance takes place.
