Topic 1 Introduction

The World Heritage List was created by virtue of an international convention signed in 1972 after several years of arrangements. The main objectives of this convention were the protection of nature and the preservation of cultural property.

The impetus for creating a list of world heritage that should be preserved for future generations was the endangered monuments of Egypt and Nubia during the construction of the Assuan dam. In 1960, the Director-General of UNESCO launched the International Campaign to Save the Monuments of Nubia.

Between 1960 and 1980  $40 million was collected from 50 countries.
